Pancreatitis is an inflammatory process that may lead to the progressive loss of exocrine and endocrine function of the pancreas. Incidence of pediatric pancreatitis is increasing. The etiology varies from adult population, multiple and often concurrent causes are involved (manly genetics and congenital malformation).
Work up and clinical management are also different from adults. Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and endoscopic ultrasounds (EUS) play an emerging role in
diagnosis and therapy of children with pancreatitis.
As both procedures are invasive and complex and no dedicated accessories are available for small patients, a formal training with simulators and observership at high volume centers, together with an up-to-date knowledge of the disease, are recommended to guarantee an adequate clinical efficacy and a satisfactory safety profile.
